One of the most common diseases in the world, diabetes is an ailment in which the body cannot produce enough insulin. This means it does not get the message from the pancreas to produce or store enough of the hormone. As a result, the body does not absorb glucose (sugar) from the blood, which it needs to convert into energy. When the glucose level in the blood becomes too high, the body starts to burn fat in order to provide the cells with the fuel they need to survive. This burning of fats produces toxic substances, which are also called by different names: LDL, HDL and triglycerides. These substances, in turn, reduce the levels of HDL, HDL-cholesterol and fatty acids in the blood.
